2012 Serology Panel

Dazzle Me Rattery submitted FSTR Ariel for a blood draw and shipped the serum to IDEXX Radil for a Comprehensive Serology Profile. Ideally you want to test a rat that is less than 6 months of age and is of your own breeding or has been in your colony for at least 2 weeks. In this particular case we needed to test one of our females and although not of our breeding, Ariel was the youngest at 8 months of age and has been in our group for several months and has been exposed to all of our females of various ages and backgrounds. She is also of good size and is very easy to handle which we thought would be helpful to the vet during a blood draw.

As you can see below we tested negative on all of the big issues such as SDA, Sendai, KRV, or any other virus that would either be seriously contagious or inhibit regular breeding practices and subsequent pregnancies. We did test positive for CAR Bacillus and RTV which are usually subclinical (asymptomatic). Both can be fairly common amongst populations of pet owners, breeders and rescues.

To read more about CAR Bacillus please refer to the Rat Guide article as well as the Charles River technical sheet.
To read more about RTV please refer to the Charles River technical sheet which states "No clinical signs or lesions are observed in rats with RTV".

We will run another serology panel in 2013.

NS11 = NS1 protein is highly conserved among rodent parvoviruses and thus serves as a
generic assay for parvovirus seroconversion.
