Babies born
January 31, 2005
Update: February 1, 2005
I am very sad to report that one of the babies
had blocked the birth canal
during the birthing process. Just before rushing Shimmers to the vet
she finally passed
the first baby, who seemed healthy save for some excessive bruising and
pure exhaustion.
The second baby was also born fine, but was exhausted. Shimmers passed
four more babies
but all of them were stillborn. All were fully formed, healthy-looking
pups but because of
the first baby blocking the birth canal they were deprived of
much-needed oxygen and died.
Shimmers is doing great, for which we are very grateful. One of the two
remaining babies
has since developed a milk band, while the other one, who is badly
bruised, has not. We
have tried hand feeding with no success. All we can do now is pray for
the one baby to
continue to thrive, and the other to start eating.

Update
February 2, 2005
The little girl passed away February 1st. She was never
able to get any food into her system. Because she did live and try
so hard to stay alive, she will be named Siren. She will be missed.
We've named the sole surviving boy Cyrus in rememberance of
my uncle who also passed away on January 31st, 2005 after
a long, brave battle with AIDS.

Update
February 3, 2005
I came home from work to find baby Cyrus had
passed today.
It looks as though Shimmer had taken a nap and hadn't realized
she had suffocated him while she slept.
A very sad ending for this whole situation.
