Buttercup & Ducky
Buttercup & Ducky were turned into a Maine shelter in a small,
filthy cage along with all of Buttercup's other daughters. The father
was also surrendered in another cage filled with their sons. We are
thankful whoever surrendered them was "considerate" enough to have
separted the males and females. They were all older rats (one year +)
and all of them black berkshire or irish, except for Buttercup who is
beige. Buttercup turned out to be a biter and therefore was thought to
have less of a chance for adoption. Knowing this family would be
difficult to adopt out as it was, Buttercup (being a biter) was slated
for euthanization. Once I heard about this I knew I could not go on
knowing that I had the chance to give her a home and didn't, simply
because it was convenient. After some thought as to how I was
going to handle another rescue, I agreed to take her on even though she
was a biter.
Buttercup was said to be very attached to her children and was
biting to protect her crew. The thought of her being separated from
them to come and stay in quarantine alone just broke my heart, so I
took in one of her daughters as well so that she could at least still
have one "baby" to look after.
After three months Buttercup is still a biter, as is Ducky, but I
love them anyway. They are living happy lives and that is what matters.
Health Notes:
Buttercup has developed a mammary tumor.
