Respiratory Weakness
There are some issues of respiratory weakness in a few individuals of this line. We believe that this has come through from our original Marked line as we experienced some heavy respiratory issues in that line.
TEK Matthias x DAZL Aurora, Feb. 2006

21mos. Pneumonia presented itself suddenly, leading to death.

21mos. Sudden onset of respiratory distress.
- DAZL Hope Has a Place
23mos. Mild respiratory troubles the last two months of life.
- DAZL Wild Violet
24mos. Very mild respiratory issues at the end of life.
- DAZL Pilgrim
28mos. Recurring respiratory issues later in life.
- DAZL Fallen Embers
34mos. Experienced breathing issues a few days before death.
TEK Matthias x DAZL Hope Has a Place, Nov. 2006.
- DAZL Orange Zest
21mos. A report from pet adopter states he and Pumpkin (below) had been to the vet for some minor respiratory issues and were put on Baytril to clear it up. Both improved but never fully recovered.
- DAZL Tasty Tacky Pumpkin
22mos. See above.
- DAZL Jack Frost
23mos. Moderate respiratory issues during the last month of life. Initially responded to antibiotics, but symptoms returned.
- DAZL Sugar Plum
32mos. Plum had developed a head tilt at a young age. Her death is related to old age and mild respiratory symptoms.

Recurring respiratory issues. Responds quickly to a course of antibiotics.

Respiratory issues during last few weeks of life.
- DAZL Gadzooks
Placed with a breeder. Died of respiratory complications at 20 months of age after one month of battling symptoms.
- DAZL Cool Hand Luke
On again/off again respiratory symptoms. Still living.
- DAZL Mezzotint
Consistent rattly breathing throughout life. Still living and in good condition otherwise.
- DAZL Raku
Respiratory symptoms began at 17 months of age. Symptoms and weight loss were recurring even after antibiotic treatment. Death at 19months.
This issue comes through from TEK Matthias, as he experienced weakness in his hind end the last year of his life. No paralysis has been experienced. Thus far, hind end weakness is experienced no earlier than 20mos old. This condition does not decrease overall quality of life.

Pregnancy and birthing issues have come through from our old Marked line. We are also monitoring for the possibility of further issues coming down from the back end of the pedigree of the 2007 outcross.
Birthing issues include individuals that have difficult or prolonged labors and produce stillborn pups. There are also individuals who have trouble grasping the idea of being moms in the first 24 hours. There seems to be a delay in hormones being activated to carry out birthing, general mothering skills, and nursing. After 24 hours litters are cared for in a normal fashion.
Fertility: Individuals of both genders have failed to produce. Some rats fail to produce with one mate but do so with another and go on to have successful litters. This comes through from TEK Matthias, as he also had similar issues and did not have a successful litter until 19mos and 27mos old.
These issues seem to be hit or miss in the line and do not yet take on a specific pattern.
Old Marked Line -
- SPR Shimmers, Feb 2005
Prolonged labor resulting in 2 live pups, 4 stillborn and 1 mass (malformed pup). Two live pups extremely bruised. Shimmers tried to care for and nurse the pups, but milk never came down. The two pups did not survive past 24 hours.
- DAZL Freya, Feb 2006 (Neice to Shimmers)
Freya was noticeably stressed in the days leading up to her due date. She was placed with her pregnant sister, due at the same time. DAZL Aurora seemed to keep her calm. Freya spotted 48 hours before birth. Prolonged labor. 6 pups produced, 2 were stillborn. Upon my attempts to remove the stillborn pups Freya consumed 2 of her living pups. Two pups remained, and Freya cared for them and Aurora's litter like normal.
- DAZL Amarantine, Mar. 2007 (Daughter to DAZL Freya)
Spotting 24 hours before birth. Prolonged labor. Birthed 7 pups, five were stillborn. Three pups born with sacs still on. Two pups born with sacs off. Two live pups born with sacs on and we helped to remove the sacs from the pups. Mara did not care for the two live pups. She acted like she didn't know what she was supposed to do.
- DAZL Holiday Flare, September 2007 & January 2008 (Neice to DAZL Freya)
First litter: Spotting 24 hours before birth. Pups were born scattered throughout the cage. Holly did not know what to do with them. She did not clean them or nurse them for 24 hours. Once her mothering instincts kicked in, we were down to 4 pups and she cared for them very well.
Second litter: Accidental litter. Prolonged labor. Pups consumed upon birth.
- DAZL Litha, March 2009 (granddaughter to DAZL Holiday Flare)
Miscarried during the third week of pregnancy.
- DAZL Bombastic, September 2009 (great granddaughter to DAZL Holiday Flare)
Birthed pups and settled in with them. After several hours shoved pups out of nest, became pale and lethargic. It was discovered that three pups were still inside, one being stuck in the birth canal. We lost Bomba and all the pups.

Birthed stillborn pups after unproductive labor.
Some ancestors/relatives of SGR Nestle Crunch have experienced difficult facial abscesses that resist treatment. These particular abscesses have appeared after 2yrs of age and eventually end with the rat being euthanized due to the abscess not responding to antibiotics and other methods of treatment. We have experienced these issues in some individuals from this line at around the 2 year mark.
Update October 2010: Although we do not have confirmation we do believe these facial abscesses are Zymbal's Gland Tumors as they are appearing consistently and are difficult and impossible to treat, always leading to the death of the rat within a few weeks to a month. All growths appear on the left side of the face just under the ear. This issue has presented itself in 3 out of the 4 rats born to SGR Nestle Crunch x DAZL Holiday Flare, and then twice out of a brother-sister litter from that pairing. Our current oldest generation of rats are the pups born to DAZL Spin x DAZL Step into the Light and they are currently 28 months of age with no signs of developing tumors. We hope this continues but are braced for the fact that they may still emerge and all will be posted here so we can continue tracking.

Euthanized at 26mos of age after failed treatments. - DAZL Sense of Humor
12/16/09 Developed a facial abscess at 23 months of age. Death was within 2 weeks.

4/2010 Developed facial abscess/tumor at 27 months of age. Death was within one month.
- DAZL Step Into the Light
5/2010 Developed slow-growing facial abscess/tumor at 32 months of age. Death was within one month.
Due to an illness that swept through our rattery in 2005 we lost several of the founding individuals of our Marked line. Those that survived the illness dealt with residual lung scarring that ended their lives early. We had hoped that TEK Matthias, having lived to be 3 years old with relative ease, would lend some of his line's health and longevity. This seems to have worked.
Original Marked line: 15-26mos with the majority living 15-20mos.
